Tai Kilpatrick is from Victoria, BC. He majored in computer science and received a certificate of German proficiency during his time at UVic. Spanning six years, four co-ops and one exchange, his degree journey took him to Germany and Japan.
What moment stands out most from your time at UVic?
I had the incredible experience of spending a term abroad in both Germany and Japan. These opportunities wouldn’t have been possible without the connections and resources I had access to at UVic.
Where did you love to study, hang out or unwind on campus?
In the warmer months, I loved hanging out at Petch Fountain in front of the library. It was a great spot for a coffee or snack, and bonus points if it was sunny.
Was there a course or professor who had an impact on you?
My most standout professor was Brandon Haworth, who taught me two computer graphics courses. He was very passionate about his research and teaching, which helped push me to pursue work opportunities in computer graphics.
What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?
My most memorable moment was going on exchange to the University of Marburg in Germany. I started taking German classes at UVic, and the exchange allowed me to put my time and effort into practice. That semester was one of my best memories. It inspired me to find opportunities to live abroad in the future.

Is your current path what you envisioned for yourself growing up?
I did not expect my degree to take as long as it did. I’m grateful for the time it took because I got the most out of my experiences and connections as a student. I knew I wanted to study computer science before I entered university, but I didn’t know what specific field I wanted to specialize in, so I’m glad I had time to experiment and find what best suited me.
How would you describe your time at UVic in one word?
Nice.
