The university flag will be lowered on Monday, Oct. 20 to mark the passing of Songhees Elder Elmer Seniemten George.
Elmer was one of the last fluent speakers and supported language revitalization for both Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. He was a prominent member of the Shaker Church and his cultural work provided healing for many community members from all local Nations.
At UVic, he was a key advisor to VP Indigenous, Indigenous Academic and Community Engagement and the broader university with Lək̓ʷəŋən language on campus. His family and communities are in our thoughts.
