Home / Campus & community / University of Victoria supports coroner’s inquest

The University of Victoria (UVic) welcomes the BC Coroners Service’s recent announcement of an inquest into the circumstances surrounding the passing of Sidney McIntyre-Starko. We are cooperating fully with the presiding coroner.

The well-being and safety of our students is a top priority at UVic. Sidney’s passing was a tragedy, and her loss is felt by all who knew her. We are committed to ensuring her passing will lead to meaningful and lasting change at UVic.

Over the past several months, we have identified areas for improvement and have made changes to enhance safety at UVic.

We know there is more work to do, and we’re committed to the work ahead. The coroner’s inquest, in addition to the independent review announced last year, will inform the actions we take to further strengthen our approach to overdose prevention and response.

Our thoughts remain with all those impacted by Sidney’s passing, and we are steadfast in our commitment that consequential change will foster a safer campus for everyone at UVic.
