Louisa Krusekopf made the most of Gustavson’s international learning opportunities. She completed three work terms in Europe and an exchange term in Copenhagen. Her experiences helped her discover how different areas of business connect and find her future path in global business.
What moment or memory stands out from your time at UVic?
There were so many unique opportunities! I was director of the UVic Commerce Student’s Society’s (CSS) International Buddy Program. I helped welcome international students to UVic and connect them with local students. We grew the program to more than 100 participants and built friendships and connections across cultures.
I also completed all three work terms in Europe and an exchange term in Copenhagen. For example, I worked at a hotel in southern Germany and in Mercedes-Benz’s supply chain department in northern Germany. I also worked at the Institute of International Management and Entrepreneurship at a university in Austria. These experiences introduced me to different industries, international teams and new perspectives on business.
Where did you spend your time studying, hanging out or unwinding?
The basement study lounge in the Business and Economics Building became a favourite spot in third year. My team and I spent hours there working on group projects.
Which course or instructor had a positive impact on your academic or personal growth?
COM 341: Operations Management was one of my favourite core-year courses. It introduced me to supply chain management. I enjoyed the mix of analytical problem-solving and working with people. These skills helped me choose a specialization in service management and identify the areas of business I want to pursue in my career.
What activity or experience outside of the classroom meant the most to you?
I enjoyed peer mentoring second-year business students. As a research assistant for Dr. Rick Cotton’s Career Achievement Project, I explored the career paths of Hall of Fame inductees worldwide. My involvement with the CSS was another highlight. I loved organizing events that brought students together.
How did the BCom program help shape your view of business?
It opened my eyes to the many layers of business. The BCom program helped me understand how and why different areas of business work together. I also learned which aspects of business interested me most and what it takes to run a business.
What are your plans after graduation? And is it the path you envisioned growing up?
After graduation, I plan to spend more time travelling and living abroad. I’d love to build a career in a global business setting in Europe.
My experiences at Gustavson helped me discover what I enjoy and the career I want to pursue.

What’s one lesson or mindset from your time at UVic that you’ll carry with you into the next chapter of your life?
Learning to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. I pushed myself outside my comfort zone. Going abroad and working with the CSS helped me grow, build connections and discover new opportunities.
What would you tell someone considering UVic for their degree?
I’d say make the most of the opportunities that interest you and create your own path. You can go abroad for a co-op, join clubs or explore different career interests. There are so many ways to shape your experience at Gustavson.
