May is Asian Heritage Month – an opportunity for UVic to showcase the stories, research, contributions and vital impact made by people of Asian descent on campus, in our communities and beyond. The following UVic experts are available to the media to discuss topics of Asian heritage during Asian Heritage Month.
Neilesh Bose (History, Canada Research Chair in global and comparative history) is a historian of modern South Asia, especially the British Empire, decolonization and the history of migrations. He has begun the Global South Colloquium, a seminar series on issues confronting the histories, politics and aesthetics in and of the Global South. He is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives. (Contact: [email protected])
Angie Chau researches transnational Chinese literature and film, contemporary Chinese-language literature, film and pop culture, visual art and translation. She is the author of the recent book, Paris and the Art of Transposition: Early Twentieth Century Sino-French Encounters (University of Michigan Press, 2023). (Contact: [email protected])
Zhongping Chen (History) is a historian of late imperial and republican China, Chinese diaspora, and environmental history of China. His most recent book is Transpacific Reform and Revolution: The Chinese in North America, 1898-1918 (Stanford University Press, 2023). (Contact: [email protected])
Fred Chou (Counselling Psychology/Faculty of Education) is an expert in Asian mental health and intergenerational trauma. His research lab has compiled mental health resources for the Asian Canadian community that can be found through the Growth & Solidarity website and they have also developed a group counselling intervention called (Re)Claim and Connect to support individuals who have experienced anti-Asian racism. Thiti Jamkajornkeiat advocates for public Southeast Asian scholarship that aligns with the critical praxes of decolonization, anti-racism and socialism. (Contact: [email protected])
Simi Kang (Gender Studies) is a Sikh American community advocate, educator, artist and scholar whose work centres on Asian American collaborative resistance as a site for imagining environmentally and economically just futures. Their areas of focus as an Asian Americanist are critical refugee studies and Southeast Asian American studies. (Contact: [email protected])
Sujin Lee is an expert in modern Japanese history who researches population discourses, biopolitics, feminist theories, and politics of reproduction. She is the author of the recent book, Wombs of Empire: Population Discourses and Biopolitics in Modern Japan (Stanford University Press, 2023). (Contact: [email protected])
Nigel Mantou Lou, a social psychologist, focuses his research on intercultural relations and racialized experiences in a post-COVID world. Lou’s research lab is currently undertaking a SSHRC-funded project to uncover the resilience factors that support Asian Canadian families’ sense of belonging and well-being. Lou emphasizes one critical factor under consideration is “the role of social support, including the connections with family members and communities and school/workplace.” (Contact: [email protected])
