Ten years have passed since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada submitted its final report and released its 94 Calls to Action to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
In advance of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Sept. 30), the following University of Victoria experts are available to media for comment:
Ry Moran (Libraries) has extensive experience with truth and reconciliation in Canada and is the inaugural Associate University Librarian, Reconciliation at UVic. As the former director of statement gathering for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and the founding director of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, Moran can discuss a range of topics related to cultural heritage, memory and broad efforts of truth and reconciliation. Rebecca Johnson (Law) is an associate director of UVic’s Indigenous Law Research Unit, which partners with Indigenous communities who work to re-articulate their laws to address the challenges they face today. In the last two years, Johnson has published “Testify! Reflections on Cultural Legal Studies and Indigenous Legal Orders” in the Routledge Handbook of Cultural Legal Studies, and “Unsettling Agreements: Law & Art in The Witness Blanket, and in The Witness Blanket Stewardship Agreement” in the journal LawArt. Johnson can discuss the 94 Calls to Action, ways that people might choose to mark the day and how to develop a yearly action plan for the average citizen. (Contact: [email protected])
