By University of Victoria

Following Black Friday and Cyber Monday is the world’s largest fundraising movement, Giving Tuesday, which is on Dec. 3 this year. According to CanadaHelps’ The Giving Report, 30% of all donations made annually happen in December, making that the largest month of giving.

The following University of Victoria experts are available to the media to discuss philanthropy, the non-profit and charitable sector, or related days of observance at this time of year, including National Philanthropy Day that occurred on Nov. 15 and Giving Tuesday:

Peter R. Elson (Human and Social Development) is an expert in non-profit (government) policy, management and leadership; social enterprises; and grant-making foundations. He is available between 12 and 2 p.m. on Nov. 26. (Contact: [email protected])

Jane Potentier, CFRE (External Relations) is the Associate Vice-President, Alumni and Development and oversees giving at UVic and the activities related to Giving Tuesday. She has over 25 years leading fundraising programs. She is the past-chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals for Philanthropy Canada (AFP). (Contact: [email protected]).

Crystal Tremblay (Social Sciences) is a social geographer and community-based scholar who led a study that looked at the economic and social impact of the charity sector in Greater Victoria. The first study of its kind, it found that the charity sector generated over $4 billion in economic activity in Greater Victoria in 2016 alone. An update to this study is forthcoming. She is also the director of CIFAL Victoria, the United Nations-accredited training centre at UVic. (Contact: [email protected])
