Three university ranking programs have again placed the University of Victoria research and researchers among the best in the world.

2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings

The 2025 Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE WUR) released Oct. 9 celebrated the quality of UVic research among nearly 2,100 research-intensive universities around the world.

UVic ranked 9th in Canada for research quality, scoring 12th overall out of the 33 Canadian universities that participated.  UVic and McGill were the only two to improve their rank this year.

UVic performed strongly on all measures of research quality, according to THE’s methodology, with particularly high scores for research excellence (based on the number of world-leading research papers) and research influence (a metric which reflects the value and significance of the sources citing them).

I’m proud of how strongly UVic’s research shows up globally. Our researchers do innovative, impactful work that is reflected in the number and quality of their publications and their strong connections to other scholars around the world.”

—Lisa Kalynchuk, UVic vice-president research and innovation

2024 Leiden Ranking Open Edition

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University in the Netherlands also released on Oct. 9 the second Open Edition of its ranking this week, which exclusively uses transparent, verifiable data and algorithms.  UVic ranked 6th in Canada for scientific impact, based on the share of research in the top-cited 10 per cent of papers.  UVic ranked 2nd in Canada in research impact in mathematics and computer science and 4th in physical sciences and engineering. These results align with those in the traditional Leiden ranking, which consistently find UVic among the top five Canadian universities for research impact.

2025 Maclean’s University Rankings

According to the Maclean’s University Rankings, released on Oct. 10, UVic ranked number 1 for faculty achievement in prestigious national awards for the sixth consecutive year. These results demonstrate the quality of UVic’s professorship. Top research talent also attracts top students, as exemplified by the fact that UVic also ranked 2nd in the comprehensive category for student awards.
