Home / Campus & community / A message about the BC Coroner’s inquest from President Hall

Today is the first day of the BC Coroner’s inquest into the January 2024 passing of Sidney McIntyre-Starko, a first-year University of Victoria student living in residence. This is an important and welcome step as we seek to better understand the confluence of events and actions that resulted in Sidney’s tragic death.

This inquest is non-fault finding public inquiry designed to determine the facts related to Sidney’s overdose and to make recommendations aimed at preventing similar tragedies.

I look forward to its findings and recommendations. My hope is that the learnings from the inquest will help make things safer, not only for the UVic community, but all post-secondary institutions in BC and nationwide, as we work to keep our communities safe amidst the ongoing toxic-drug crisis.

The inquest’s findings, alongside the results of Bob Rich’s external review, the provincial guidelines, advice from our research panel and results from the Students’ Assembly, will inform the university’s approach to overdose prevention and harm reduction for years to come.

Our thoughts remain with all those impacted by Sidney’s death, and we are steadfast in our commitment that consequential change will foster a safer campus for everyone at UVic. Please care for yourselves and one another and know that there are supports available for students and faculty/staff.
