UVic has many programs, plans, and policies in place to help keep you safe. Nevertheless, emergencies can happen. And if you become seriously ill or injured at UVic, it’s important that the university has a way to notify your emergency contacts.
Last year, as part of UVic’s efforts to enhance harm reduction, overdose prevention and response, the university committed to reviewing our protocols for emergency contact notifications. After a thoughtful review and consultation with partners, both on and off campus, the university is introducing new emergency contact procedures for faculty, staff and students.
The new procedures provide clear and easy-to-follow guidance around when and how emergency contacts should be notified if a student, staff or faculty member is seriously hurt, sick or otherwise unexpectedly incapacitated.
Here are a few important things to know about the new procedures:
Collecting emergency contacts
Moving forward, the university will ask students, staff and faculty to identify TWO emergency contacts in Online Tools. We’ll also provide regular prompts to review and update your emergency contacts.
Important note: It’s good practice to make sure your emergency contacts know they might be contacted if an emergency occurs.
Responding to emergencies
In an emergency, please call 911 and then Campus Security.
Campus Security will ensure your emergency contacts are notified, as appropriate. If emergency contacts must be notified, Campus Security will:
- Determine who should make the call
- Monitor to ensure notification is completed
Don’t forget to download the UVic SafetyApp for emergency notifications, safety information, contacts, maps and procedures—all in one place.
Privacy considerations
The collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with these procedures have been developed in conformity with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and the procedures are formally assigned to the university’s Protection of Privacy Policy (GV0235).
