Yassin Guitouni is proud to call Victoria, BC, his hometown, where he stood out as both a student and athlete at Mount Douglas Secondary. After four seasons with UVic’s men’s soccer team, he’s graduating this fall with a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Computer Science, having balanced the demands of academics, co-op work terms and varsity athletics.

What moment stands out most from your time at UVic?

My favourite memories were spending time with all my friends on campus. I will always think back fondly on the times I sat in class with my close friends or saw all my teammates in the changeroom at the end of the day.

Where did you love to study, hang out or unwind on campus?

My favourite spot on campus was Mystic Market. It’s the perfect spot to study while refuelling, and I would always meet or run into friends there.

Was there a course or professor who had an impact on you?

Daniella Damian was a very impactful professor for me. She helped me secure my first co-op term with the Inspire program, where groups of students worked alongside local stakeholders to tackle community problems under the guidance of more experienced mentors. It was memorable because it was the first time I saw how my education and knowledge could apply outside the classroom. I have worked with her on many occasions since, and she’s helped me grow as an individual.

What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?

My last ThunderFest was the highlight of my UVic soccer career. ThunderFest is the biggest home game of the year. Scoring a hat trick in front of all my friends, family and 5,000 cheering students was a night I will never forget.

Is your current path what you envisioned for yourself growing up?

My plan going forward is to take some time for myself in 2026. I want to travel around and pursue my soccer career for a year, whilst bolstering my computer science resume. After a year of doing this, I will either continue to play soccer if I am successful or pivot into my career as a software developer.

If you could give one piece of advice to an incoming UVic student, what would it be?

My advice would be to spend more time on campus. My one regret from my time here is all the classes I missed and the time I spent working at home. I feel so much happier when I spend my days going to class and working on campus.

How would you describe your time at UVic in one word?

Memorable.
