It is with great sadness that the university recognizes the sudden passing of Marne Jensen, former vice-chair of the University of Victoria (UVic) Board of Governors.
Fierce and fearless, Marne had an unwavering commitment to public service and making things better for people. Her connection to UVic spanned more than four decades and reflected her deeply held values of equity, justice, fairness and public accountability.
Marne first came to UVic as a student, where she was actively involved in the student movement during the 1990s and advocated for access to quality post-secondary education. Her commitment to the university continued throughout her career. She served as the general manager of the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS) for almost a decade and as a member of the UVic Board of Governors.
Marne served as general manager for the UVSS for nearly a decade. Her commitment to students and access to education began long before her time with UVSS and continued afterward. She was a mentor, advocate and leader, supporting countless students and staff. Her passion for student advocacy will always be remembered.”
—Dale Robertson, general manager, UVSS
As vice-chair of the UVic Board of Governors, Marne was known for her focus on reputational integrity and public confidence in decision-making. She brought a thoughtful and principled approach to governance, asking difficult questions when needed, always with a view to keeping the university’s responsibilities to the communities it serves at the forefront.
Marne was an amazing colleague who was courageous and principled. She was an avid champion for quality education and the important role it plays in making a real difference in our community. She brought a firm commitment and strong leadership to UVic and the communities it serves, always with her signature humour and style. Her passing is a profound loss for all of us.”
—Erinn Pinkerton, chair, UVic Board of Governors
Marne lived and worked in Victoria for 40 years, serving as a seasoned labour relations and human resources professional for more than two decades in the public education, transportation and non-profit sectors. Throughout her career, she brought the same values that defined her service to UVic: equity, justice and fairness to all, along with a commitment to integrity and public accountability.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Marne was a respected colleague, mentor and friend to many. She will be remembered for her intelligence, perceptiveness, humour and generosity, as well as for the conviction and authenticity she brought to her work and relationships.
The university community extends its heartfelt condolences to Marne’s family and loved ones including her mom, Karen; step-dad, Bruce Squire; sister, Jodi Jensen (Andrew Fergus); and step-mom, Julie Jensen.
The university flag will be lowered in Marne’s memory on Monday, Oct. 5, 2026.
