Electricity has been restored to all buildings

The maintenance work affecting power to some buildings on campus has been successfully completed. Electricity, internet and WiFi have been restored to all buildings.

If you have urgent concerns about electrical outlets or appliances still not working, please contact Campus Security. Student housing residents can submit non-urgent repairs through the housing portal

Thank you to the teams who worked to perform this maintenance as quickly as possible to limit impacts to our community. Also, thank you to our campus community for your flexibility and understanding.

Planned power outage Aug. 8, 2026

On Saturday, Aug 8, the university is performing some vital maintenance on equipment that supports the electrical supply to campus.  From 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. electricity will be out in the area marked as Area 1 on the map below.

This work is imperative to address the long-term maintenance of UVic’s high-voltage system in order to mitigate the risks of unplanned power outages. It involves a high complexity of planning and requires all of us to work together. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we perform this necessary work.

Preparing for the outage

  • Save your work and turn off your desktop computers.
  • Make sure your devices are charged.
  • Turn off and unplug your electronics, including power bars and electric heaters.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help keep food cold and dispose of or move any food that may spoil
  • Keep stoves and other appliances turned off until power is restored.
  • Never use a camp stove, barbecue, or propane or kerosene heaters indoors. A build-up of carbon monoxide gas in closed areas can be deadly.
  • Never plug a portable generator into an electrical outlet. This can cause electrical danger to your neighbours and utility workers.

Student housing

Residence buildings will be without power, internet and WiFi on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

If you need a place to study, work, or charge your devices, power will remain available in the Mearns-McPherson Library, open from 10:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. on August 8, 2026.

The Front Desk at Residence Services, including our Confererence team offices, will be affected by this outage. We will not have access to telephones or emails during this time. Please visit the office if you require any assistance.

Most elevators in the residence complex will be out of service during this outage. Čeqʷəŋín ʔéʔləŋ (Cheko’nien House) and Sŋéqə ʔéʔləŋ (Sngequ House) will each have one elevator running.

As always, if you experience an emergency during the outage, please calll 911 and then Campus Security.

If you have questions or need support, the Residence Services Front Desk is available before, during and after this outage.

Food & dining

The Cove will be operating on a generator during the August 8 outage and is open 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. Some services may be limited.

Starbucks will also be closed on August 8.

Campus safety

Campus Security  is open on Aug 8 with full services available. If you need accessibility support, or have safety concerns, please reach out to them. In an emergency, call 9-1-1 and then Campus Security.
