Most residence buildings, University Houses 1, 2 & 3, the Campus Services Building, Campus Security and the Bev Glover Greenhouse will be part of the outage on Nov. 15, from approximately 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Electricity, internet and wifi availability may differ from building to building, as some have backup generators that provide limited power.
Campus safety
Campus Security is open on Nov. 15 with full services available. If you need accessibility support, or have safety concerns, please reach out to them. In an emergency, call 9-1-1 and then Campus Security.
Student housing
Most residence buildings will be without power, internet and wifi on Nov. 15, from approximately 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
You don’t have to vacate your building during this outage. However, the rest of campus remains open for normal Saturday hours and there are tons of fun events in the city. We encourage you to take advantage of the many alternatives out there to stay warm, access wifi and charge your devices.
If you have questions or need support, the Residence Services Front Desk is available before, during and after this outage.
Food & dining
The Cove will be operating on a generator during the outage and is open 7:30 a.m. – 10 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15. Some services may be limited.
Starbucks is closed on Nov. 15, but you can grab a cup of coffee and some good food at the Biblio Cafe, which is open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Keeping you up-to-date
We’ll update this notice when power is restored to all buildings. Check uvic.ca for updates.
Preparing for the outage
- Save your work and turn off your desktop computers.
- Make sure your devices are charged.
- Turn off and unplug your electronics, including electric heaters.
- Close your windows to help maintain heat.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to help keep food cold.
- Keep stoves and other appliances turned off until power is restored.
- Never use a camp stove, barbecue, or propane or kerosene heaters indoors. A build-up of carbon monoxide gas in closed areas can be deadly.
- Never plug a portable generator into an electrical outlet. This can cause electrical danger to your neighbours and utility workers.
Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we work to perform these necessary repairs.
