Javier Sagaste (he/him) is proud to call Victoria, BC his hometown. For five unforgettable years, he played for UVic’s men’s soccer team—leading as captain during his final two seasons. Now, after balancing the demands of varsity athletics and academics, he’s graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.
What moment stands out most from your time here?
My favourite memories throughout my years at UVic are the trips and travel with the men’s soccer team. Each trip was special, and I was lucky to have a great group of teammates. Apart from the trips and travel with the team, playing in front of all the fans and students at ThunderFest is something I will never forget.
Where did you love to study, hang out or unwind on campus?
My favourite spot on campus to study was the back right corner in the library on the third floor. On nice days, I would relax by studying in the Centennial Stadium bleachers or in our team changing room before training.
Was there a course or professor who had an impact on you?
I was fortunate enough to have many amazing professors who helped me and made a positive impact on me throughout my years.
What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?
Outside of the classroom, the activity that meant the most to me was the soccer program and having the opportunity to see all my friends each day at training.

Is your current path what you envisioned for yourself growing up?
The path I envisioned for myself growing up is much different from the path I’m on now. Learning more about myself and my interests during my time at UVic helped guide my path in the classroom. In terms of soccer, my current path is quite like the one I envisioned for myself growing up.
How would you describe your time at UVic in one word?
Unforgettable.
