The BC Coroner’s inquest into the passing of Sidney McIntyre-Starko concluded today. On behalf of our university community, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to Sidney’s family, friends and loved ones and to everyone impacted by this loss.
The inquest jury made a series of recommendations, including two specifically for the University of Victoria and several others for the broader post-secondary sector in BC. We will take time to consider the findings of the inquest, which will inform our approach to overdose prevention, response and harm reduction at UVic.
Universities and colleges across British Columbia have work to do, collectively, to help safeguard their communities against toxic drugs. The University of Victoria takes its role in this seriously. We remain committed to learning from this tragedy and taking the steps necessary to foster a safe and supportive environment for everyone at UVic.
