New grad Eddy Bortzer (he/him) studied education at UVic. Born in Titusville, Pennsylvania, in the northeastern United States, it took him 15 months to complete his teacher education degree.
What moment stands out most from your time at UVic?
My favourite memories were from my student practicums—at Monterey Middle School in Victoria and DAAXIIGAN SK’ADAA NEE in Masset, Haida Gwaii. I loved connecting with the students and the community, especially while learning outdoors together on the land and water.
Where did you love to study, hang out or unwind on campus?
Finnerty Gardens was my favourite place on campus. Whether we were having class there or I was finding a quiet moment between classes, it was always a peaceful spot to return to.
Was there a course or professor who had an impact on you?
Lyndze Harvey’s class EDCI 303: Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Canadian Education stayed with me. She encouraged us to reflect on who we are and how we want to show up in the world as educators.

What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?
Some of the best moments were the simple ones—stretching in the sun and talking with my classmates between classes. Those conversations were full of laughter, care and connection.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I’m heading to the Philippines to teach and help develop an outdoor education program at the International School Manila. I never imagined this exact path growing up, but it feels aligned with who I am now.
How would you describe your time at UVic in one word?
Expansion.
