During her time at UVic, Jaanvi Garodia combined business studies with a clear purpose: driving sustainability forward. From co-op placements focused on climate initiatives to studying abroad in Thailand, she built a foundation rooted in impact. Her next step? A career in corporate sustainability—proving that business can do good and still go far.
What is a favourite memory of your time at UVic?
One of my favourite and most defining memories was my co-op work term with Destination Greater Victoria as a Corporate Communications Co-op. What stood out to me was connecting with local sustainability leaders for a newsletter segment—it was such a meaningful experience that strengthened my relationships, grew my skills and sparked my interest in pursuing sustainability-focused work in the future.
Where did you love to study, hang out or unwind on campus?
The law library felt like a hidden gem—quiet, full of natural light and surrounded by trees. It became my go-to during midterms and finals when I needed to focus and feel grounded. I also loved the common lounges in the UVic dorms, especially in first year. That’s where my closest friendships began—through late-night cooking, spontaneous dance parties or just talking for hours. I found a sense of community that carried me through UVic.
Was there a course or professor who had an impact on you?
Brock Smith, who teaches marketing and entrepreneurship at Gustavson, had a big impact on me. Through him, I worked on a project with the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, interviewing cruise passengers and gaining hands-on experience in tourism research. It sharpened my communication and sales skills. I also served as board secretary for the Oak Bay Sea Rescue Society and completed my entrepreneurship specialization under his guidance, which helped me think creatively about real-world solutions.
What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?
One of the most enriching parts of my university journey was going on exchange to Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. I studied Thai language and culture, explored the country by motorbike, lived with monks, practiced meditation and yoga, and earned my scuba certification. It was the first time I had space to reflect, explore and be present. I met people from around the world and came away with a deeper sense of self and purpose.

Is your current path what you envisioned for yourself growing up?
I thought I’d follow my mom’s path as a clinical psychologist—I even started at UVic as a psych major. But as I explored, I found my way into business. Now I focus on corporate sustainability, helping organizations reduce their footprint through procurement, emissions reduction, water toxicity management and more. Through a sustainability accelerator with OnePointFive Academy, I’m deepening my skills. This path feels aligned with my values, and I’m excited to keep learning and contributing.
How would you describe your time at UVic in one word?
Empowering.
