Graduating with a BA in geography, Eve Seward (she/they) is excited to build a career path in community-engaged work applying her UVic geography degree and Geographic Information Science (GIS) training. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Seward is a self-described “everything geographer” who bridges human and physical geography concepts through GIS.
They completed an eight-month co-op term with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and served as co-chair of the Society of Geography Students (SOGS).
What moment or memory stands out most from your time at UVic?
The memories that stand out the most to me come from my involvement in UVic’s geography student course union, SOGS. This role changed everything for me. I found lifelong friends, discovered who I wanted to become, built connections with faculty and helped create a community that made campus feel like home.
Where did you spend most of your time studying, hanging out or unwinding on campus?
My favourite place to study and hang out was the SOGS room in the B-Wing of the David Turpin Building. I grabbed coffee there, chatted with friends or caught up on coursework. I also loved unwinding at Cadboro Bay Beach, looking for sea glass, sea otters and sea lions.

Which course or instructor had a positive impact on your academic or personal growth?
GEOG 491: Global Food Systems and Sustainability in Practice, also known as the Belize Agroecology Field School. Throughout the course, I learned that I enjoy working in the field and conducting community-engaged research. I also travelled to places I’d never been before.
What activity or experience outside the classroom meant the most to you?
My co-op term with the Canadian Wildlife Service’s Habitat Assessment and Data Management Unit. I gained an amazing mentor and had the opportunity to use my skills in GIS to support nationally important wildlife and habitat conservation initiatives. That experience gave me the confidence and clarity to pursue a career in GIS.
What are your plans for after graduation and is it the path you envisioned for yourself growing up?
I plan to establish a career in GIS here in Victoria and to travel. My path is not what I would have expected growing up. But I have always aspired to learn the most I can about the world and explore new places. My geography degree has allowed me to do all that!
What would you tell someone who is considering choosing UVic for their degree?
When you choose UVic, you’re not only choosing to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world but also joining a fun, inclusive and supportive campus community.
