When students return to campus this September, they’ll notice a new look for Campus Security—one designed to be more approachable, recognizable and distinctly its own.

Campus Security is often the first point of contact for all types of queries and concerns at UVic, from visitors seeking directions, to students who’ve lost their keys, to fire-safety patrols, first-aid calls and more. That’s why their uniforms matter.

“UVic Campus Security personnel play an important role in helping create a safe, welcoming and supportive campus environment,” says Jessica Maclean, Director, Campus Security. “We want our staff to look professional, easy to identify and approachable.”

The team heard feedback from students and other emergency responders that their former uniforms too closely resembled those of other emergency responders. This meant that some didn’t feel comfortable approaching security officers for help. Plus, visibility was an issue, particularly during large events and high-stress situations like emergencies and first-aid calls.

While the pants and shirts remain a standard navy blue, officers will be dawning bold ‘UVic blue’ vests and jackets with large ‘UVic Security’ badges and labels prominently affixed. They also have bright, reflective flashing, which makes them easier to see at night. The new look stands out in a crowd, distinguishes them from other emergency responders and other security contractors who might support events and activities on campus.

“Our campus is a large and busy place,” says Maclean. “When people need help, being able to quickly recognize a UVic Campus Security officer can provide reassurance and save valuable time—whether we’re assisting a student, supporting a visitor or guiding emergency responders to where they’re needed most.”

UVic Campus Security personnel are certified in First Responders First Aid, Occupational First Aid (intermediate and advanced), Basic Life Support, CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and Naloxone administration. As such, the uniforms also had to be highly functional and allow easy access to the equipment UVic Security personnel carry, including a radio and boom mic, flashlight, Nasal Naloxone, gloves, tourniquet, other first aid equipment, a notebook and more.

UVic Campus Security cars will soon get a similar makeover, too—all with the aim of making them easy to find wherever you are on campus.

According to Maclean, all of these changes are a result of what they’ve heard from the UVic community. The team engages members of the campus community through meetings with the student societies, staff and students in First Peoples House, Substance Use Health Steering Committee, Residence staff, and more. “Creating a safe and welcoming campus is a shared effort,” says Maclean. “We’re grateful to everyone who takes the time to share their experiences, ideas and feedback with us. Those conversations help guide our work and ensure we’re continuing to grow alongside the community we serve.”
