Message from Erinn Pinkerton, Chair, Board of Governors
Dear members of the university community,
Today, please join me in celebrating the arrival our ninth president and vice-chancellor, Dr. Rhonda McEwen. I am excited to see the energy and leadership that Rhonda will bring to our campus. I hope you will be inspired by her vision, her values, and her passionate advocacy for higher education in Canada and beyond.
I would like to thank Dr. Elizabeth Croft for her service as acting president and vice-chancellor over the past several months. Her commitment and dedicated leadership were critical during a time of institutional transition and supported a successful start to the academic year.
As we welcome Rhonda to UVic, I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish as a community.
Message from Dr. Rhonda McEwen, President and Vice-Chancellor
Hello University of Victoria!
After driving all the way from Ontario, my family and I have finally arrived. The trip across Canada was the beginning of a bigger journey, one of learning and understanding. We took the opportunity to really see this country, reflect on its beauty and diversity, meet the people of each province, and open ourselves to our surroundings. This is how I wanted to arrive at the University of Victoria, with openness and a thirst for learning and understanding our new home.
Seeing this campus alive with students in the quad, study spaces and classrooms grounds me in UVic’s sense of place. It reminds me that we never stop learning, and that we are all working together to better ourselves and our communities. It also strikes me how sporty folks are here! I am so eager to experience Vikes culture and attend my first game.
I recognize that I have much to discover, as truly appreciating a new place takes time to participate in the richness of its culture and the many connections that shape it. I look forward to immersing myself in UVic life as I get acquainted with each area, your passions, your projects — and of course, the best walking trails on campus. I am sure many of you remember when you first arrived on campus, so I appreciate your willingness in supporting me during these early days.
I am ready to begin engaging with you and building relationships to make magic together. On my first day in office, I met with the Elders at the First People’s House. It was a vulnerable and precious time of sharing. I felt very welcomed by the Elders and am grateful for their willingness to deepen our partnership.
I am always ready to listen and learn, but also to share my own story, my expertise and experiences, so if you see me on campus, please come and say hello.
I look forward to serving this community. Thank you all for the warmth of this welcome.
