For the past eight months I was fortunate enough to work a co-op placement as this year’s United Way Campaign Assistant at UVic. From generating campaign awareness to running events, I have had an unforgettable experience.
Before applying for this position, I had no concept of United Way or the work they do for Southern Vancouver Island. Being an Environmental Studies and Geography student, I am constantly learning about the gaps in our systems which leave pockets of our community without support. Especially with the increasing pressures of climate change, social inequity and economic hardship, community support and mutual aid is essential for protecting our vulnerable populations and helping them to cope with life-changing circumstances. Thankfully, there are grassroot initiatives based right here in Victoria that are working to address these needs already. Through my experience as campaign assistant, I have learned just how essential a non-profit organization like United Way is to our community to connect the funds to the resources.
Being a part of this campaign has not only been fun but so rewarding. In my very first week, United Way took the individuals supporting workplace campaigns out into the community to meet with long-time community partners. It blew me away that there are community services tucked into every corner of the city. The gratitude and warmth towards United Way from these partners was evident. The partners spoke about how they would not be able to run without United Way. I got to witness firsthand the organizations in Victoria where so many not only access support but also find friendship and community.

Working alongside a non-profit has surpassed any initial assumptions I may have had about how fundraising happens. I continue to be struck by the dedication, care and thoughtfulness that goes into every decision with the goal of creating a positive impact in our community. Through my time in this position, I have learned a variety of skills. Beyond interacting with students and UVic faculty and staff at events, I have become familiar with different fundraising software, created social media content, learned how to prioritize tasks within the campaign and even wrestled with Excel.
I have had the incredible opportunity to see a side of UVic I couldn’t as a student. I am inspired by the incredible folks on the United Way committee and many other supporters that make this endeavour possible year after year.
As always, it’s the UVic community who made our campaign year possible. This year we raised over $190,000—that’s all thanks to you!
