On Tuesday, Sept. 29, the University of Victoria community will come together to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is an opportunity to honour Survivors, remember the children who never came home and stand alongside the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of residential schools.
New time and location
This year the gathering takes place at UVic’s Centennial Stadium.
Students, faculty, staff and community are invited to join us, 1:30 – 2:45 p.m. at the stadium to gather, listen, learn and reflect on the truths of residential schools and the responsibilities we carry forward together.
Whether you are attending for the first time or have joined us for many years, come with an open heart and a willingness to listen, witness and learn.

This special gathering will include speakers, reflections and poetry alongside drumming, singing, dancing and cultural protocol. Together, we will create space to honour Survivors and those who did not make it home while recognizing the ongoing strength of Indigenous Peoples, families and communities.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action ask us to build understanding of residential schools, Indigenous histories and cultures, Treaties and Indigenous rights. For the 2026 event, our attention is focused on remaining grounded in truth and committed to action. This theme reminds us that meaningful reconciliation begins with understanding. It calls on each of us to listen to the truths Indigenous Peoples have carried and shared, deepen our learning and consider how we put that knowledge into action.
